From Jersey Boy to PA Explorer: My Lifelong Love of Travel

Hi, my name is Charlie Daidone, and I grew up in the New Jersey tri-state area. I own FunPennsylvania.com as well as other travel and tourism sites. I would like to take some time to show you how to plan the perfect Pennsylvania weekend trip (from a local expert).

New Jersey

I grew up quite an avid traveler, as my mother used to take me on weekend jaunts quite a bit. I remember when my sister and I were young, we used to go to Palisades Amusement Park quite often. It, of course, has since closed.

Growing up in New Jersey, I have visited over 100 attractions and have gone on numerous weekend (stay-over) getaways.

Top attractions include Six Flags Great Adventure, Grounds For Sculpture, Lakota Wolf Preserve, and Liberty State Park.

I have also visited almost every beach in the Garden State.

New York

Of course, we explored the greatest city on Earth, the Big Apple.

We also visited many areas a bit further away in New York State, such as Greenwood Lake, Bear Mountain State Park, Lake George, and even as far as Niagara Falls.

Weekend Jaunts & Lifelong Memories in Philadelphia

When I got older I met one of my first loves, and she and I would frequent Philadelphia and other areas in Pennsylvania.

In Philadelphia, we frequently would visit South St., Fishtown, and one of our favorite sections named Old City.

We used to eat at Jim Steaks on South Street and hit up the bars and shops. We would then walk to the Italian Market on 9th Street and buy Italian specialties.

We took more than just a couple of tours on horse and carriage around the city, and we also went on the infamous duck boat tour, which goes from land directly into the water and lets you explore 100+ iconic landmarks—from historic sites to hidden gems.

Beyond Philly: How Pennsylvania Stole My Heart

She had not traveled as much as I had, so I showed her the ropes by taking her to see some Amish culture in Lancaster, in some country in the beautiful Poconos.

We also visited Valley Forge, Gettysburg National Military Park, and the Hershey chocolate factory, and we even ventured out as far west as Pittsburgh for weekend getaways.

We would always try to find different kinds of places to stay: bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, and of course, because we really didn't have a lot of money, we would have no problem staying in motels.

I remember us going hiking along the Delaware River and visiting Ricketts Glenn State Park, which has some beautiful waterfalls by the way.

Destinations and Getaways in Pennsylvania

Other destinations included Lehigh Valley, Peddler's Village, and a wonderful farmers market in Easton, PA.

One thing I never did, which I still regret, was to see Phil's Prognostication at Gobblers Knob. The reason for that is that I'm a huge Bill Murray fan, and I adored the movie Groundhogs Day. The movie was filmed in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, which is pretty close to Pittsburgh. So I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't know that back when I actually visited Pittsburgh. It was still about a 1 and 1/2-hour ride, but with my traveling experience, that would've been a piece of cake!

Motels, B&Bs & Pig Farms: The Most Unique Lodging in Pennsylvania

Heading back to Eastern PA, here are some of my favorite attractions.

Probably one of the most unique attractions I've ever visited and also spent the night at was the Ross Mill Farm located in Jamison, PA. It's a very odd but beautiful place where pigs live and are sold.

It is dubbed by the locals "The Pig Farm."

Established in 1990, The Ross Mill Farm Inc. soon became a trusted leader in pet pig care, pig boarding, and behavior training.

The Lodge at Ross Mill Farm: a 5,000+ sq. ft., state-of-the-art retreat designed exclusively for pet pigs. We stayed in a very rustic stone cabin, which I can only guess is from the late 1800s or the early 1900s.

The pigs would roam around free and come visit us regularly. They even came inside of our cabin where we could hang out with them and pet them.

If you're looking for somewhere very unusual to hideaway for a night or two, I would 100% recommend this is as a weekend getaway.

Another attraction we visited was the Bates Motel, located in Glen Mills, PA. I remember that we stayed at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Glen Mills Chadds Ford.

One of our favorite towns in Bucks County was undoubtedly New Hope. We would go there on weekends, eat at one of the fine restaurants, and watch live music at night. We always found an inexpensive B&B to nestle in for the night.

We also used to stay in this hotel, Bridgeton House on the Delaware in Upper Black Eddy, for secluded weekend getaways.

Whether you're mixing classic cocktails in a trendy Philadelphia bar or serving local brews in a quaint Pittsburgh pub, Pennsylvania offers a dynamic and rewarding environment for aspiring mixologists. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about bartending in Pennsylvania.

Why Bartend in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania’s diverse population and thriving hospitality scene make it an ideal location for bartenders. Another advantage is Pennsylvania's growing craft beer and spirits industry. With over 400 breweries and numerous distilleries producing unique, locally crafted spirits, bartenders have an opportunity to showcase regional flavors in their creations. This growing trend adds a creative edge to the job, allowing bartenders to craft signature cocktails using local ingredients.

To bartend in Pennsylvania, you must meet a few basic requirements:

  1. Age Limit: The minimum age to serve alcohol in Pennsylvania is 18, though some establishments may prefer hiring those 21 and older.

Safety is a common concern for parents and beginners. Skateboarding, like any physical activity, comes with risks. However, these can be minimized with proper safety gear and training. Essential gear includes a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Beginners should start on smooth surfaces, such as driveways or beginner-friendly skateparks, to build confidence and skills.

Many of these parks feature beginner-friendly areas, making them perfect for those just starting out.

3. What Should Beginners Look for in a Skateboard?

Choosing the right skateboard is crucial for a positive experience. Beginners should look for:

Planning Your First Pennsylvania Trip

Planning a trip to Pennsylvania? PA is a fantastic place to visit for tourists thanks to its incredi-ble historical significance, rich culture, natural beauty, and welcoming nature. It is also a unique state quite different from the other major tourist spots, so planning ahead and knowing what to expect when visiting for the first time is helpful. This post will offer a few tips for planning your first trip to PA so that you can make the most out of your time here and see everything that we have to offer. Interested? Read on for a few tips for planning a trip to Pennsylvania.

Recommendations

First, you should consider where you want to visit during your time here. There are many places offering a range of highlights and experiences, so it is recommended that you do a bit of trav-eling. A few of the most notable highlights include:

-    Philadelphia - Top attractions for first-time visitors in Philadelphia include a visit to the Liberty Bell, a run up the rocky stairs, and of course eating a classic Philadelphia cheesesteak.

-    Pittsburgh - If visiting Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh offers more than just a few cultural walking tours of the city. Famous landmarks include Phipps Conservatory and botanical Gardens, and Mount Washington.

-    Hershey - Pennsylvania, is known for its iconic Hershey's chocolate-themed attractions, including roller coasters, water rides, live entertainment, and of course, plenty of sweet treats.

-    Gettysburg - Gettysburg, PA is a town steeped in American history and Civil War lore. It's known as the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, a turning point in the American Civil War, and is home to the Gettysburg National Military Park.

-    Pocono Mountains - The Pocono Mountains, nestled in northeastern Pennsylvania, are a breathtaking natural playground where you can find waterfalls, hiking trails and plenty of lakes for fishing or boating.

-    Scranton - attractions include the Steamtown National Historic Site and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum.

Consider The Time Of Year

You should also consider the time of year that you are visiting. PA experiences all four seasons, so you can find fun things to do no matter the time of year. Fall and winter can get chilly, but there is also something magical about these months, particularly the fall foliage in the Poconos and the festive atmosphere around the holidays. Always make sure that you pack appropriately for the time of year and the activities you have planned.

Book Accommodations Well In Advance

You should also book your accommodation well in advance for your trip, especially if you plan on staying in popular areas like Philadelphia. Places get booked up quickly, especially during school holidays, so book ahead of time to avoid disappointment (you may also be able to save money).

Philadelphia is a popular tourist destination, especially during peak travel seasons, so it's wise to book accommodations early! Here are some tips for getting ahead of the game:

  • Tru to book at least 4-6 months in advance if possible for peak seasons (spring, summer, and fall).
  • Consider booking directly through hotel websites or hotel booking apps for the best rates and flexibility.
  • Be flexible with dates and locations. Hotels just outside of the city center or in nearby suburbs may offer more availability and lower prices.
  • Keep an eye out for special deals and promotions, especially if you're a member of a loyalty program.

Book Your Flight

You will also want to book your flight to your first destination well in advance. If it is a long flight, you will want to make sure that you have activities to keep you entertained in the air. Jackpot City has excellent online pokies to play that will make the time fly by. They have many themed pokies to choose from, such as Lord of the Rings, Basketball Star, and Lucky Shot. There are also classic Vegas-style and video slots to try, so it should be easy to find a few games to keep you entertained before landing.

Soak Up The Culture & History

When creating an itinerary for each place during your stay, you will want to ensure that you ex-perience each place's culture and history. You should create an itinerary allowing you to see the main highlight, but you should also have some flexibility. Be sure to explore the local food scent (as mentioned earlier, a Philly cheesesteak is a must!) And check out the local sports teams while you are here.

If you are planning your first trip to PA, these tips should help. This is an incredible state quite unlike any other, with a huge amount to see and do, so it is vital that you plan ahead to make the most out of your time here.

Moving to Pennsylvania: 4 Top Tips

Picking Pennsylvania as your home state is a great idea. Not only is it home to some of the best sports teams, including the Phillies, Eagles, and Pirates, but it also has plenty of outdoor activities on offer thanks to the endless natural beauty. In Pennsylvania, you will discover mountains, forests, rivers, and much more. Plus, if you want to enjoy some nightlife, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg will show you a good time!

To help you find the right place in Pennsylvania and to make the move a lot easier, use the following four top tips for relocating.

1: Research the Best Neighborhoods

Pennsylvania is home to a wide variety of towns and cities, including bustling Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, as well as the beautiful natural scenery of Presque Isle State Park and Ricketts Glen State Park. You’ll find many friendly neighborhoods all throughout the state, so do your research before picking an area.

Of course, the best Pennsylvania neighborhood for you is entirely personal. You might want a bustling city. In this case, Philadelphia might be ideal. Local builders are constantly re-developing and improving the neighborhoods in Philia. Grays Ferry ia one such affordable up and comig neighborhood as is Point Breeze which is just a few miles south of South Street. See a complete list of Philia neighborhoods.

You may prefer a quieter area to raise a family, which might mean a smaller town like Lemont or Radnor Township.

2: Declutter First

So, you’ve found your perfect home in a new Pennsylvania area. What next? Before moving, it’s important to declutter your items first – especially if you want a fresh start! The last thing you want is to drag all your old, forgotten items you no longer need to a new neighborhood. So, before you move, go through each room, decluttering as you go. If you are moving to the city of Brotherly Love (Philia), you have some great local options to help you declutter. To make decluttering easier, use a Junk Removal Company in Philadelphia to get rid of your excess trash. The chances are, when decluttering for a move, you’ll have more than the general garbage collector will take!

3: Check Out the Local Amenities

Once you have arrived at your new home, it’s time to check out the surrounding area. Your priority is looking at the local amenities. Where is your nearest store? Which gym is best in the local area? The best way to get an idea for a place is to get in your car and drive around, taking everything in. Of course, researching the best places online can help, too.
